Persimmon Trees
Persimmon trees were introduced to America by way of California. It is thought that the fruit, which is native to China, spread to North American as additional varieties were introduced to Japan and Korea.
Persimmons are very resilient and thrive in USDA pant hardiness Zones 4 through 9. Once they are established, these trees do well when they have full sun and access to good wind movement. They also require regular watering during their younger years but once they are established, they will require watering only during periods of drought. Persimmons don’t typically require fertilization and they should be pruned sparingly in early Spring or late Winter.
The most important tip is that American persimmon trees require both male and female varieties in order to bear fruit while the Asian variety is self-fruiting.
